Foreign Language Acquisition at an Early Age (March 16, 2006)

One of the most frequently debated issues in ELT today is undoubtedly the question of when children should start learning a foreign language. Commonly held views promoting early or very early start which are not well-founded and supported by research can cause misunderstanding and lead to false expectations or wrong measures. As the Czech government is now planning to introduce English to Grade 1 of primary schools (see Národní plán výuky jazyků), we believe expert opinions should be considered.

The one-day conference held on March 16, 2006 and organized by the English Department of the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University in Brno together with AMATE (Association of English Language Teacher Educators) aims at presenting research results and sharing expertise in the area of FLA at an early age. Contributions should be 20 – 30 minutes long. All conference papers will be published.
